Online Learning with Live Classroom Lessons

Classroom-Based Lessons at Home

At Greenfield Commonwealth Virtual School, we can bring a public school education into your home in real-time. In our classroom-based programs, elementary, middle, and high school students use teleconferencing and collaboration tools for a school experience that combines scheduled, in-class time with lessons and work that are completed. The classroom-based programs combine the following into a best-of-both-worlds school:

  • Scheduled online classes that take place in real-time
  • Direct communication with teachers and students outside of scheduled class time
  • Online and offline school work that is completed when and where it is best for the student

In the “live lesson,” students communicate with teachers and classmates, asking and answering questions (anonymously, if they choose) in a safe environment where every student is encouraged to “raise their hand” in class. Teachers use real-time progress and feedback tools to adjust their teaching to best suit students and subjects.

Before and after the real-time classes, students work in a variety of technology, including Canvas (our learning management system), where students can message teachers and classmates, complete and turn in assignments, and work with online resources that expand on all of the lessons at their own pace.

We offer elementary, middle, and high school classes in the classroom-based programs.

Elementary School at GCVS: Grades K-5

The virtual elementary school program consists of the four core academic courses of Reading and Literacy, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Students also take art, music, and physical education.

Online classroom lessons are supplemented with traditional materials, including workbooks, videos, projects, and hands-on activities, taught by certified teachers.

Middle School at GCVS: Grades 6-8

The virtual middle school consists of English and Language Arts, Math, Science, and History. Students also take art, music, physical education, and technology classes over the course of the year.

Online classroom lessons are, like traditional classrooms, supplemented with literature and novels, videos, and hands-on projects that help students learn objectives, all taught by state-certified teachers who are also subject matter experts..

High School at GCVS: Grades 9-12

Our high school program provides a core curriculum of challenging college preparatory courses, Advanced Placement courses, and a generous complement of electives in all departments.

We students a virtual high school education that is engaging and challenging, aligned to MassCore . A hybrid of real-time online classes and lessons that are accessed in a student's own time gives students the best of both worlds.

Real-time Classes from Anywhere, to Anywhere

While our classroom-based programs combine scheduled live classroom time with lessons and school work that is done at a student’s own pace, students benefit from the “live classroom” environment in other ways. Their collaborative nature and real-time feedback are essential to interactive learning, but teachers also “take the show on the road.” When students are learning about specific subject matter, our educators can hold their classes from locations around the state and even the world, connecting students directly to their lessons.
