Autumn’s splendor is gradually fading to November’s muted and mellow landscape. As we look forward to next month, here are some important updates.
Quarter 1 Ends November 2nd
The first quarter of the school year will end on Friday, November 2nd. If you have any last-minute assignments out there be sure to get them done! Our teachers will not be teaching any live lessons on Friday afternoon so they can work on grades. Students will be expected to be online and complete any assignments for the afternoon. Be sure to check with your child’s teacher if you need more information.
Report cards will be mailed out to families right after the Thanksgiving Recess. Just a reminder to Caregivers and Learning Coaches that you can access your child’s grades at any time, using your observer account in Canvas.
Middle and High School Meetup on November 1st
Our middle and high school students have been invited to a performance of The Diary of Anne Frank at the Unity House Theater in Springfield on Thursday, November 1st. After the performance, our students will get a chance to interact with the members of the production about the play. There are still a few seats available. Sign-ups will close at 3:00 pm on October 30th.
Elementary School Meetup on November 16th
Our elementary students have been invited to a meetup at Old Sturbridge Village on Friday, November 16th. This promises to be a day full of activities by both museum staff and GCVS teachers. The students will be learning about National Holidays with a focus on the First Thanksgiving; engage in a lesson about math was used in the 1800s trades and in the general store; look at how land was used back in the 19th century and compare that use to how we use land in the 21st century; and enjoy a read-aloud of The Ox Cart Man by Donald Hall, comparing the story to life in 19th century America. Old Sturbridge Village is an outdoor living history museum, located in Sturbridge. Students and their families who are able to attend need to register by November 2nd. If you are not able to attend in person, there will be a livestream video available. Be sure to check your Canvas messages from Ms. Oliveira, our grades K-5 Family Engagement Coordinator, for more details.
Virtual Open House on November 7th
If anyone is interested in learning about our school as a public school option that can meet your students’ personalized needs, you are invited to attend a Virtual Open House at 7:00 pm on November 7th. Dr. Judy Houle, our Executive Director, will be joined by other staff members to give prospective families more information and answer your questions. You can sign up here: https://www.gcvs.org/virtual-open-houses/
Be sure to mark your calendars…
In addition to the events above, November is a busy month sprinkled with some days off from school for holidays:
- November 12, 2018 is the Veterans Day observed holiday – no school.
- November 21-23, 2018 is the Thanksgiving Recess – no school on those days.

Every year we have to miss the November field trip with my son because you always have it the Friday before Thanksgiving. I understand why you do this but it’s not fair for those of us who have to choose between a Thanksgiving Basket and a field trip. My son always is disappointed because he really would like to go to Sturbridge Village. I myself would like to go to because I haven’t been there since I myself was in Elementary School. We don’t have money for places like this without a discount like the schools get. I understand you try to do the live streaming but so far that has not been very good. Either it don’t work or it has limited connection and everything is choppy. If you do have a good live stream it usually are the field trips we manage to go to. Could you please consider having the elementary school field trip the second Friday of November next year? Thank you very much for at least considering it.
