Online Educational Technology that Supports Special Education and English Language Learning (ELL)

As an online school, GCVS is committed to providing students with equal access to all of its educational programs through the use of exceptional teaching and technology. The programs and services we have in place fully support Individualized Education Programs and Section 504 plans, and provide our students with appropriate accommodation. In addition, our teachers use software and hardware to personalize lessons to individuals, helping them reach their potential.

Accessibility is tailored to each student based on their needs and their abilities, connecting them directly with assistive technologies and supports.

Learning Resources for Students

GCVS online students have access to everything a traditional school can offer, and more. Students and families can request hardware assistance, including audio amplification systems and large-screen laptops preset for larger fonts (which can be adjusted at home), to better accommodate disabilities. Noise-cancelling headphones can also be provided to help reduce distractions.

Our online platforms are integrated with specialized learning tools, including line reader tools, text to speech, accommodations for response, highlighting tools, alternative backgrounds and font color, magnifiers, answer masking, and more. We also have ASL to text video transcription available.

Teaching with Online Special Education Resources

GCVS teachers are encouraged to use all of the tools available to create the best lesson for each student. Teachers maximize access to lessons and subjects according to IEPs and 504 plans, while actively encouraging students to learn.

Learning Management

Teachers use the Canvas learning management system to modify classes and lessons to meet IEP and 504 accomodations, including extending time, modifying assignments and assessments, and increasing and changing the visual resources included in each lesson.

Teachers can also utilize breakout rooms for 1-on-1 instruction and for students to collaborate in smaller groups.

 

Speech to Text, Text to Speech

GCVS students and teachers use Texthelp’s award-winning assistive technology daily to enhance reading, writing, and language learning, including use of innovative speech-to-text and text-to-speech tools. 

Write, Type, or Speak Math

GCVS accomodates mathematics learning with EquatIO’s tools that integrate with Canvas and Google’s suite of tools, allowing students to write, type, or even speak mathematical expressions. EquatIO also supports online collaboration, letting students work directly with teachers.

Supporting Social and Emotional Learning

Padlet’s anonymous, interactive white boards give students the comfort and safety of participating in classroom discussions and feedback without having to worry about feeling self-conscious about how they answer.

Adaptive Differentiation and Student Motivation

Teachers work with MobyMax to create adaptive lessons and use diagnostic testing and progress monitoring to make sure students needs are being met. In addition, students can be motivated by built-in contests, games, and award badges for their personal successes.

An Essential Engagment Tool

Engaging learning games for all students, including ELL, connect them to content in playful and relevant ways, that lets both the student and the teacher be part of the learning process by encouraging self-paced learning and remediation.
