Veterans Day Observance
Friday, November 10th, is the observance of the Veterans Day holiday, which falls on Saturday, November 11th, this year. There will be no school for GCVS tomorrow in observance of this holiday. Take the time this weekend to remember and thank veterans of our armed forces who have served our country in time of need.
First Quarter Ends
Thursday, November 9th, marks the end of the first quarter for GCVS students. Teachers will work on compiling quarter grades, report cards will be prepared, and they will be mailed via the US Postal Service to families the week of November 27th.
November is Family Literacy Month
GCVS will be joining schools and families across America in celebrating Family Literacy Month. Everyone is encouraged to join us! Here’s the challenge: read and record your minutes of reading during November and share your results with us. All participants will be recognized for your contributions. How many minutes will we read? We will track the results and let everyone know the grand total!
What counts as reading? You can read a book, a magazine, a graphic novel, a newspaper, travel guides, etc.! Find something fun and interesting!
Who can read and count minutes? Students, Learning Coaches, Staff Members, and other interested friends and family you wish to have participate! (PS – if an adult reads aloud to a child, the minutes count for both!)
Children and families in grades K-5 are encouraged to focus on materials related to kindness and the reading log below has some great resources for you.
Students in grades 6-12 can also focus on books about kindness as well, but you are welcome to read outside of that focus as well. Here’s a link to the reading log for your grade levels:
If you want to submit your reading logs on a more frequent basis, we will tally up the results and let you know about our progress along the way. Feel free to submit more than one log and get them to us on a weekly basis!
K-5 Storytelling Outings
In celebration of our reading accomplishments, our K-5 students and their families are invited to participate in one of two outing potentials on Friday, December 8th. One will be at the Eric Carle Museum at Hampshire College in Amherst and the other will be at the Milford Town Library. Students and adults are welcome to dress up as your favorite storybook character for the event and pose for a group picture!
The event at the Eric Carle Museum will be from 10:00 am-12:00 pm and has a fee for adults and siblings of students, but GCVS students will be admitted for free. They have designed a program especially for us! The event flyer below has details about payments, etc.
The event in Milford is free to all, with John Porcino, a Storyteller and Musician, who will lead the way! This event will take place from 2:00-4:00 pm. Please see the flyer below for details.
In order to adequately plan for these outings, we need families of K-5 students to please let us know if you are coming by November 20th, using this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/W6LYX8Y
The GCVS Board of Trustees will meet on Monday, November 13th, at 5:30 pm in the GCVS Conference Room. Click on the link below to see their agenda.
The GCVS School Council will meet on Tuesday, November 14th, at 3:00 pm. We still have vacancies for two parents on the council. We would love to have representatives from grades 6-12, but all parents are welcome to express an interest. If you are interested in serving, please send a letter of interest to me at firstname.lastname@example.org. The link below will take you to the agenda for that meeting.
Have a great weekend! Dr. Judith Houle, Executive Director
